Live loach shochu

The first drink to appear on here. The owner of the place I was at gave me this as a present. It is a glass of shochu and ice, together with some Grenadine. Oh, and five live baby loach fish. I swallowed them whole at the third attempt. It was hard to swallow, not because of what they were, some live whole fish, but because I was a bit nervous about choking. But they slid down easily. Not too unpleasant either. I would have this again.

Herring roe

The eggs from herring. An interesting dish but not sure I would order it out of choice.

Whale steak

This is the first time I have seen cooked whale on the menu. I have only ever seen it raw before. Raw whale feels more like fish but cooked whale definitely seems more like beef. Here, it seems to have been fried up with some onions. And pretty delicious it was too.

Cod nabe

Similar to the precious dish. This is nabe made with cod.

Sardine meatball nabe

Meatballs made from sardines cooked nabe style. Nabe is the name given to a dish such as this where vegetables and other items are served in a bowl-like dish with hot soup.

Buckwheat seed soup

Buckwheat is used to make soba noodles. This soup uses the seeds from the buckwheat plant. Lovely on a cold evening.
